Computer Health

Today we thought we share some really useful computer health tips, let us know if any of these help you!

Computer Updates

If you see the icon below on your taskbar, it means that your computer is pending a restart to install and configure windows updates. This usually takes between 5 and 10 minutes. We recommend doing this at your earliest convenience, as missing updates can cause issues.

To ensure that the updates install, please select “Update and Restart” rather than the usual “Restart” option.

Shut Down vs Restart

Following on from the point above, Shut Down and Restart are slightly different on a technical level. Shutdown takes a quick snapshot of your preferences and settings so that on the next boot they load exactly as they were, this is so your computer will load faster when you turn it back on. This means that any problems will still be there when you switch it back on. Restarting your computer will clear the memory (RAM), reset the cache,  and complete pending updates.

Keep Your Computer Cool

Overheating can damage your computer's components. Make sure your computer has good ventilation and keep it in a cool environment. The ideal temperature for a computer is between 15-27°C. Keep your computer in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or other sources of heat. We also recommend using a laptop stand to improve ventilation.

OneDrive Sync Error

If your OneDrive logo looks like this:

This normally means that there is a sync error, which is caused by conflicts within documents when there are changes are made that cannot be merged. The two options are to either “Open in Office to merge changes” or “Keep Both Files”. We recommend keeping both files as it ensures that no data is lost. When you select “Keep Both Files” it creates a duplicate document with the changes that caused the conflict.
